Why the Best AI Music Marketplace Can't Be Tied to One Generator
Walled gardens are the wrong model for AI music. Here is why tool-agnostic matters more than you think.
ElevenLabs launched a music marketplace in March. It’s slick, well-funded, and only works with music made inside ElevenLabs.
That last part is the problem.
The Walled Garden Trap
When a marketplace is tied to a single generator, it’s not really a marketplace. It’s a storefront for one tool’s output. That means every creator on the platform is limited to what that one tool can do, and every buyer is shopping from a catalog that all sounds roughly the same.
AI music generators have different strengths. Suno does certain things well. Udio does other things well. Soundverse, AIVA, Stable Audio — they all have their own sound and their own creative range. The best AI music right now often comes from creators who use multiple tools, sometimes layering output from one generator with finishing touches from another.
A marketplace that locks you into one generator cuts off all of that.
What Tool-Agnostic Actually Means
Tool-agnostic means we don’t care what you used to make the music. Suno, Udio, Soundverse, a custom model you trained yourself — it all works. Upload it, set your price, sell licenses.
This matters for creators because it means you’re never stuck. If a better generator comes out next month, you can use it. If you switch tools, your entire catalog still lives in one place. Your marketplace presence isn’t tied to any single company’s roadmap or survival.
It matters for buyers because the catalog is genuinely diverse. Different tools, different styles, different creative approaches — all in one place. You’re not shopping from a monoculture.
The Platform Risk Nobody’s Talking About
Here’s the thing creators should really think about: if your marketplace is run by the same company that makes your generator, they control both your tool and your distribution. If they change their pricing, their terms of service, or their output quality, you have no leverage. Your music lives in their ecosystem and you can’t take it anywhere.
That’s not a hypothetical. It’s how every walled garden in tech has played out. The platforms that win long-term are the ones that let creators own their presence and bring their work from wherever they made it.
Why This Is Cambrian’s Approach
Cambrian is tool-agnostic by design. We’re not building a generator. We’re building the commerce layer — the place where AI music gets discovered, licensed, and sold. We don’t care how you made it. We care that buyers can find it, license it clearly, and use it commercially.
That’s a fundamentally different bet than building a walled garden. And we think it’s the right one.
